Diet Changes = Clear Complexion

Recent studies have linked the consumption of dairy and high glycemic foods such as milk, cheese, white bread, pasta, and rice with acne. Blood sugar levels rise after eating, and the glycemic index calculates at which rate blood sugar levels rise from certain foods. High glycemic foods, have the fastest rate of blood sugar response and these foods can cause development of acne. Common triggers of an acne outbreak include the overproduction of oil in the skin's oil glands, the release of blocked oil from hair follicles, and bacterial growth in the hair follicles. Much of what causes acne relies on the body's oil production. High-glycemic foods, including dairy products, are known to cause changes in the body's cellular growth, which can lead to increased oil production.

Thus, if looking to avoid acne, stick to a low-glycemic diet by following these helpful tips:

  1. Say no to processed foods. Natural and whole foods are lower on the glycemic index compared to processed foods like fruit juices.

  2. Pair it with protein. You can bring down the overall glycemic index of a meal by pairing it with a protein, which is harder for the body to digest.

  3. Fiber over fat. Fiber is lower on the glycemic index because the body can't easily digest it. Thus, high fiber = low glycemic index
